CTO (Fractional)
Boundless is seeking a fractional CTO (~2-days /week) to be a strategic and pragmatic leader for our organization. This role will involve collaborating closely with the leadership team, with key Product and Data stakeholders, and with cross-functional stakeholders both within the company and externally.
The Fractional CTO will help bring clarity within a complex existing tech stack, and build simple yet scalable foundations that can support our key B2B and data platform products. They will be responsible for providing technical direction and product decisions for the development of our platform, in addition to building and managing an external technology team. As an early-stage leadership hire, you’ll have an incredible upside on growth and impact in the dynamic environmental data and analytics space.
The ideal candidate will have a strong familiarity working both on the strategy and execution of environmental data and analytics and/or data software. They understand the growing needs for climate tech solutions across the cleantech investing space, as well as the larger sustainability sector. They are passionate about their role and the tangible impact they can make in improving truth and transparency in climate tech investing and saving the planet.

Boundless is an industry research and environmental impact analytics firm that provides objective and actionable information to move investment dollars more quickly toward clean technologies and climate solutions. Our science-based, data-driven approach is grounded in the proven methodology of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The scores and metrics derived are trustworthy and reliable because they are unbiased and validated by external industry and/or scientific experts. Boundless has the capabilities to perform rapid (and screening) LCA, LCA consistent with ISO 14040, and Scope 1,2,3 emissions inventories.
We are rapidly expanding as we extend our environmental impact analytics to a growing customer base of investors, companies, and large institutions. We are also developing online data platforms for our company and investor subscribers, to provide access to our climate impact scores, reports and analytics, and industry benchmarks. Responsibilities
The fractional CTO must be comfortable taking over a complex tech stack, with the objective of consolidating and simplifying technologies over time, while directing the development of new software platforms / SaaS products.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing direction for the following responsibilities and to oversee their execution by the external team in charge of their execution.
Work closely with Leadership and Product to articulate a clear vision and co-develop the technical strategy, working closely with them to ensure rapid development.
Develop, manage and execute a technical product roadmap.
Lead the evaluation and consolidation of the existing tech stack (SquareSpace, Wordpress…) towards a centralized backend (including technology recommendations).
Maintain all existing technology, including industry benchmark database, environmental data and analytics platform, company portal and corporate website..
Lead the evaluation and deployment of new technologies (including the integration of Machine Learning into research processes), and stay up to date on the latest industry innovations and enhancements to ensure that the company is prepared for rapid technology advances in the environmental impact analytics industry.
Deliver minimum viable product to market at rapid speed to support accelerating revenue growth and client retention.
Audit and manage infrastructure needs and development, coordinating with leadership, research, product and tech development teams.
Provide leadership needed to build a technology team.
Implement processes and metrics to ensure the software development organization is efficient and focused, and that the products are market ready, highly reliable, scalable, and maintainable that adhere to industry standards for architecture, security and best practices.
Be aware of potential competitive products and help in positioning Boundless technical offering to remain technically competitive, user friendly and promote adoption.
Be willing to roll up your sleeves and take ownership.
Qualifications & Skills
7+ years of experience in corporate data, engineering, and analytics-related roles.
Previous experience scaling up data and analytics platform
At least 5 years of architecting data focused solutions for enterprise scale leveraging SQL and No-SQL technologies.
Deep experience with data analysis, database development, NLP and BI tools and web analytics platforms.
Expertise in scaling-up new data and analytics products
Comfortable managing data and analytics infrastructure at scale using AWS suite of tools
Easily handle the unstructured environment of fast moving startups
Ability to create a workplace environment that fosters trust, quality work and values diversity.
Excellent analytical and communication skills, ability to influence broad technical discussions and decisions, across different audiences and seniority levels.
Strong executive presence and ability to lead cross-functional teams.
