Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions include direct emissions from operations and purchased electricity and heat. Scope 3 emissions include emissions from waste and transportation activities, materials sourcing, and the full supply chain of a company, and are estimated to account for up to 90% of a company’s total GHG emissions. By the end of 2021, the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) will begin to phase in mandatory climate disclosures that include Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

Scope 1

Direct GHG emissions from operations controlled by the company.

Examples

  • Generation of electricity, heat, or steam

  • Clinker calcination for cement production

  • Mobile combustion sources

  • Fugitive methane emissions

Scope 2

GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, cooling, and heat consumed by the company. 

Examples

  • Electricity for production processes or office lighting

  • chilled water, hot water, or steam supplied for manufacturing processes and/or building operations. 

Scope 3

Other indirect emissions not covered by Scope 1 and Scope 2. Scope 3 emissions occur from sources not owned or controlled by the company.

Examples

  • Indirect emissions associated with the entire supply chain of a company, including business travel; waste management; purchased materials and goods; and transportation of materials.
