Diabetes
Nearly 465 million people have diabetes around the world — a figure that is projected to expand rapidly over the next 25 years. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of these cases, while the remaining 10% are type 1. There is not currently a cure for either condition. Managing diabetes is costly for individuals and healthcare systems. Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes can be controlled using several approved drugs, and diet and exercise. Supplemental insulin injections are typically reserved for patients in advanced stages of disease progression. Patients with type 1 diabetes do not have the same extent of treatment options, as insulin is the only approved treatment.
